Iron City Fishing Club Bursaries

This award is to be distributed to Indigenous students who are attending post­secondary institutions across Canada [i.e. College, University, technical college or apprenticeship program], as outlined within this agreement, with demonstrated financial need for contribution to education costs. Although demonstrated financial need will be the primary consideration, other factors may also be considered such as involvement in and contribution to the community as a whole; and demonstrated academic merit and performance.

First preference for students from Moose Deer Point First Nation and second preference for students from Beausoleil First Nation. If there are no students from those communities, then a student from Wiikwemkoong Unceded Territory or Wasauksing First Nation

The Iron City Fishing Club was started by a group in Pittsburgh in 1882 and would become an annual fishing expedition. The Club’s first encampment was on Sparrow Lake and for the next twenty years, they searched for a permanent home. It was Jerry Monague, an Indigenous guide, who took them to a site with a sandy beach in the Sans Souci area of Georgian Bay. The land was purchased in 1901 and a permanent camp was established, with members first staying in tents on platforms that were gradually turned into cottages. For decades, the Club employed many Indigenous staff members, many of whom came from Moose Deer Point First Nation, Beausoleil First Nation (particularly from Christian Island) and the Metis community around Wood’s Bay. In establishing the bursary, the Club wishes to honour and thank the Indigenous Peoples who helped make Iron City a vibrant summer community on Georgian Bay for subsequent generations of Club members.
