About James Bay Bursaries

The James Bay Bursary was set up by a group of physicians from across Canada who lived and worked in the communities along the western James Bay region from 2013-2018. The physicians taught and mentored many medical students and residents including aboriginal learners, and had the opportunity to learn about First Nations culture, teachings, and history. The extensive inequities experienced by this population which we witnessed in our day to day work inspired the James Bay Bursary, which we hope will provide opportunities for a new generation of indigenous learners to pursue careers in healthcare.
